February, Dalat to Di Linh, 77km

One of
the benefits of climbing into mountains is dropping out of them. We began our four-day
ride to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) today. HCMC, around 300km south of Dalat, lies over
1400 metres lower than Dalat. Although we had some climbing under a hot blue
sky, for the bulk of our ride we tumbled out of the Central Highlands, loving
particularly the sweeping curves and gradient of the Prenn Pass. The weather
that prevails in the more moderate climate of the highlands is ideal for
growing vegetables and flowers. We passed several gladioli farms today, and saw
many scooters transporting cut gladioli, picked long before the flowers open. Almost
all Vietnamese enterprises are small to medium in size and I am endlessly
fascinated by the visual evidence of Vietnam’s small business ethos. A good
day.
