We took a
taxi to Dalat’s old art deco railway station, designed in 1932 by French
architects Moncet and Reveron, and opened in 1938. During the latter part of
the Vietnam War, the railway was abandoned and the station fell into disuse. It
was returned to limited service in the 1990s when a short section of track was
opened as a tourist attraction. We had read that in a restored old carriage,
converted to a cafe, we could order blue cheese burgers, our main reason for
visiting the station. Unfortunately, this information proved to be dated. We strolled
then down to Xuan Huong, a manmade crescent-shaped lake around which Dalat is
built. On the way there we came across a photogenic structure, which we have
been unable to identify, above a square lined with propaganda posters and red
banners. Promises and lies, no doubt, but attractive and stirring...
