Merry Guest
House 140,000LAK
In a
narrow brick lane off the night market is enough food to feed the 5,000. Vendors
line either side of the lane leaving a constricted path for locals and tourists
to stroll cheek by jowl beneath corrugated iron roofing and naked light bulbs
hanging low. Smoke drifts from a dozen fires, the aroma of barbecued meat and
fish and chicken wafting on the cool air. Rickety tables are laden with stainless
steel containers piled high with sausages and noodles, green beans and corn.
For just 15,000LAK you can load a bowl from the buffet of your choice and take
a seat on a narrow wooden bench and order a beer and eat, eat, eat... We dined modestly
on barbecued pork dipped in chilli sauce and enjoyed every juicy mouthful and
then bought miniature milk tarts in a woven banana leaf bowl to nibble at while
walking the night market where it was hard to resist the beautiful fabrics,
woven, embroidered, appliquéd... We had spent a lazy day pottering around town
on our bikes, just loving the beauty and vibe of Luang Prabang.
