These root vegetables were so fresh I could still smell the rich soil from which they had been pulled.
Charl had proposed we cycle the coast road between El Jadida and Sidi Abed, a ride just shy of 30km - a great decision.
It was clear that the coffee salesmen anticipated high Sunday volumes along the promenade south of the city as at least 20 of them had parked at short intervals along the road. Although it was still chilly, the joggers and soccer players were out and about shortly after 0900. Also fishermen and one lone man huddled in a deck chair facing the ocean, his body and head warm inside a traditional pointy-capped coat.
Beyond the city outskirts, we began to see dozens of fruit and veg vendors (oddly, the avos and strawberries are more or less the same size - the former tiny, the latter enormous). Then a market and auction that stretched for a couple of kms.
Later still we cycled past an oil refinery and large port, the road taking us beneath pipes hissing steam and slapping conveyer belts.
It is hot in the sun, and cold in the shade, and we are grateful that the wind is behind us.
@Luanne Grant, you asked about the terrain. Had we been fit, I would have described it as relatively flat. Today was less so, with a series of inclines and declines described to us once in Namibia as oppietjies and affietjies. Our maximum speed today was over 40kph, which attests to a longish drop and hints at commensurate climbs.
We're spending the night in a bungalow with a view of the
piscine (swimming pool) and ocean.
