Wikipedia:
“Đổi Mới (... Renovation) is the name given to the economic reforms initiated
in Vietnam in 1986 with the goal of creating a “socialist-oriented market
economy”. Almost overnight the “big bang” economic liberalization transformed a
stagnant peasant economy into a vibrant, market-driven, capitalist system.” Post
Doi Moi, Vietnam transformed from being an importer of rice to an exporter of
this essential foodstuff. Over one third of Vietnam’s rice is grown in the
Mekong Delta. Much of our ride to Go Cong, situated south of Ho Chi Minh City
at the northern end of the Delta, was through urban and peri-urban areas. But
after crossing a large brown river on a slow car ferry we found ourselves in a
quieter world coloured green, green, green. A world lush with bright flowers
and pastel single-storey homes. A world of roadside cafes that provide hammocks
for lolling about in instead of more traditional seating. A warm, humid world. Particularly
loved an orchid nursery we visited on the outskirts of Go Cong.
