In need
of an adrenaline fix? Take a ride through this city of 9 million souls. Renamed
Ho Chi Minh City in 1976 after north and south Vietnam were unified, the
country’s biggest metropolis is often still referred to by its former name,
Saigon. Most of the tourist sites are located in District 1 and it is along and
adjacent to Pham Ngu Lao street that budget tourists find themselves a home
from which to take in the city’s high- and low-lights. We cycled from the Hotel
Tu Phuong to Bui Vien Street, a narrow lane off Pham Ngu Lao, and here located
a small, well-appointed room, and put down roots. Less than 200 metres in
length, Bui Vien boasts several mini-hotels, two or three massage parlours, and
many restaurants offering both local and international dishes. Such bliss... Absolutely
loved our roller-coaster ride through the city. Literally thousands of
autocycles throng the streets, gathering in impressive numbers at the traffic
lights, whizzing old and young, male and female, from A to Z and back.
