A long,
tough day bringing us into the city of Dalat just as darkness settled in. We
climbed two mountain passes, one 16km long, the second 10km; the first on a
smooth wide road at a reasonable gradient, the second on a rough potholed
narrow road at a steeper gradient. Between the passes the road undulated; after
the second it followed the mountain ridges, dipping and ascending, offering
views of valleys filled with hot houses. We climbed over 2100 metres in all
from Tay Son, then lost several to find ourselves in Dalat at 1500 metres above
sea level. It was a beautiful day, clear and hot. Many of the homes we passed
seem to be holiday homes, with gardens instead of shops. In the gardens, agapanthus
and moon flowers glowing gold in the sunshine. A tiring day, but lovely.
