November, Phou Khoun (by bus from Phonsavan)
Nok Aly Ya Guesthouse 60,000LAK
The bus driver that returned us to Phou Khoun today
was a more careful driver than the young man who transported us to Phonsavan,
despite which three or four people were ill on the rock ’n rolling journey. We
had left our bikes and dirty laundry at the Nok Aly Ya and returned to find the
bikes safe and the laundry clean. The Phou Khoun market is wonderful to visit.
It comprises a single dirt lane that runs parallel to route 13. On either side
of the lane strange and exotic items are displayed for sale alongside more
mundane, recognisable goodies. Worms and grubs on polystyrene trays wrapped in
sheer plastic film and short fat bananas; pink dragon fruit and small viennas
barbecued in a chilli dip; eggs steamed to explosion point and roasted chicken
on a stick; pigeons coloured green and aubergine and a variety of salad greens
complete with small yellow and white flowers. The meats and fish kept fly-free
by plastic bags twirled at the end of gerrymandered fans. Our small room only
has one thing to recommend it – the stunning view of the hills into which we
will cycle tomorrow.
