Keeping
cool in Cambodia is an interesting challenge. From roadside stalls throughout
Vietnam we could be sure of cold drinks from real fridges; in Cambodia we are
often served tepid liquids stored in red “Made in Thailand” coolboxes. Quite
often sodas and beers are kept on a shelf. In these cases we may be offered ice
in a glass and straws – an unusual way to imbibe beer. Room rates vary
dramatically depending on whether you opt for fan or aircon. A fan room may go
for $5; the same room with aircon remote provided will cost you $12.
Our ride
today was on a much improved road with considerably less dust. We met two sets
of cyclists – our first in Cambodia. A Tibetan couple who had begun their ride
in their home country; and a German couple doing sections of the world during a
one-year stint on their bikes and ending their trip with an organised leg from
Lhasa in Tibet to Kathmandu in Nepal.
