31 May, Selçuk
Barim Pension 60TL
(breakfast included)
A
long, lazy day. Our pension is super – owned by two brothers, one of whom is a
keen cyclist – so we were happy to spend large chunks of the day either lolling
about in our room or lolling about in the courtyard garden, connected to the
net, not accomplishing very much at all. Selçuk is a town of 35,000 that
services tourists intent on visiting nearby Ephesus, which we plan to do
tomorrow. It has a lively Saturday market, overpriced, but laid-back
restaurants, and the remains of a Roman aquaduct visible in patches near the
town centre. Storks nest here from March to September, both on the aquaduct and
on the electricity poles on top of which nesting racks have been built. The
Barims have a nesting rack on top of their chimney and the Spanish castanet
clacking of the mom with her single chick in the nest there can be heard throughout the
pension on occasion. Serendipity at work: a fellow guest overheard us enquiring about a physio for Charl, and offered us his physio skills, telling us afterwards that Charl would live. Thank you, Des from Alice Springs.
