Biking Poland

16 June 2023, Kogutowo, 59.88km
Pole Namiotowe 96.15zł [R441]

Yesterday evening and this morning, we took a quick ride around pretty Szydłów enjoying particularly the original gate in the reconstructed walls, and the wooden statues of famous Poles, including Walesa, Copernicus and Curie, and folklore characters unknown to us.
Wikipedia extracts: The first mention of Szydłów dates back to 1191. The settlement was located on a branch of the Vistula trade route. The city derived its income from the transit of wine, hops and cattle herds. In 1565, a large part of Szydłów was destroyed by fire. During this period, many Jews settled in Szydłów. Szydłów was largely destroyed as a result of warfare in 1944–1945. It was rebuilt in the post-war years.

Another 60km day has brought us to accommodation in a tent on a farm some 70km east of Krakow. We will spend two nights so we can pay a visit to Zalipie tomorrow.
Regular grazing got us through. We began our day with peach yoghurt in Szydłów and ended it with pizza in Wietrzychowice. In between, we made and devoured ham sandwiches in a rural bus shelter; enjoyed an ice lolly in Stopnica's garden square while the church bells chimed 11; downed a strong coffee served with a ginger biscuit in Solec-Zdroj's inviting pedestrian street; ate grapes on a bridge over the Vistula; and settled for crisps (fromage) in Gręboszów.
We were delighted to find that bigger trucks are not allowed on either the section of 756 we rode today, or on the 973. This meant for only 6km or so, while we raced along the 79 that links the two country roads, were we concerned about traffic.
Other highlights: we spotted two deer in a field that came to attention when they spied us then spring-spronged away. And we took a pont over the river Dunajec, a service offered free of charge between 0600 and 1800.
A good day.
