It was a beautiful morning, not too hot with a clear blue sky above and more greenery than we have seen in weeks below. Bush and thorn trees, the trees growing taller as we moved north. Between the trees, enormous termite nests, phallic in the veld.
It was not an easy run because the first 30km were predominantly uphill, which tired us out for the easier kms thereafter. But, despite the too-long distance, it was a good ride.
On several occasions we saw a triangular road sign depicting a black-and-white image of a warthog, warning motorists that these wily swine push their way through farm and game fences to feed on the verges and may wander onto the road. We saw several warthog today, on both sides of the fence. Charl managed to spook a male on the verge, impervious to cars and trucks, but made anxious by the bike. The hog turned tail, misjudged the gap in the fence, and ran headlong into it while his family watched on in dismay from the other side of the barrier.
Wewelsburg is a farm that has been owned by the same German family for 100 years, Annegret and Hans-Jürgen Bahr having lived there for the last 30. They have created a small campsite on the farm, with ablution blocks and barbecue facilities. Several dogs and cats make themselves at home there, as well as peacocks and guinea fowl. And lots of goats.
Annegret sold us beer and cold drinks and meat for a braai. We thought we might be the only guests, but early evening two French couples arrived in a single vehicle, touring Namibia at the tailend of an 18-month world trip.
