I ran out of energy long before we ran out of road. Both our low average (9.2kph) and our maximum speed (over 50kph) tell a story of hilly terrain. The R301 climbed out of Souira Kedima, then turned inland to follow a shallow river east to a bridge that crossed it. We meandered for a long, slow time before returning to an ocean coloured brown by roiled sand on a windy day.
We are not strong enough yet to cycle the hills, so walk the ups and whizz the downs, and do what we can on the in-betweens. Getting on and off the bike is draining.
At one of our roadside breaks, I discovered our odometer had just hit 300km total. We probably need to hit 2000km before we begin to feel good, although hints of strength are teasing us.
Last night, our neighbours were two French cyclists, Gabriel and Erik. Neither young, both fit. Today they planned to cover what will take us two days. They're likely averaging over 25kph!
We had a delicious breakfast of eggs and tomatoes with flat, round breads and mint tea. The kitchen from which it was served was pretty grubby, and our pavement seating was beside the butcher with innards hanging a-glisten from his wooden roof. A cat lolled in a glass display cabinet. No utensils, but a large blue barrel from which you could wash your hands before eating. Yum.
We found cheap accommodation at a campsite virtually on the beach. Being close to the sea can be a romantic fantasy! The wind is icy and grainy with sand. Our cabin has a cement floor and low beds, but it is considerably more comfortable than a tent, and the bathrooms are clean.
A good day, really, despite some of the above!
