Visited some of the ruins of the ancient Town of Scupi. In the year 518 Scupi was completely destroyed by an earthquake. It is assumed that the people from Scupi moved to live on KALE (a hill) currently in the center of Skopje.
The moving of the city is often connected with the founding of Justiniana Prima. Justiniana Prima was a legendary city founded by Justinian I, who reigned over the Eastern Roman Empire in 527–565. The connection is based on the assumption that the village, Justinian I's birthplace, is located near Skopje (Tauresium). The descriptions fits in with Skopje's fortress (Kale), the Old Bazaar and the aqueduct (which are all still landmarks of Skopje).
There is however different opinions regarding the construction of the current structure.
There are three theories:
1. During the reign of Rome (1st century); according to this theory the aqueduct fed water to Legionary settlement Scupi.
2. During the Byzantine Empire (reign of Emperor Justinian I); according to this theory, the aqueduct shipped water to the new settlement Justiniana Prima.
3. During the reign of Ottoman Empire; according to this theory the aqueduct was built in the 16th century for the many Turkish public hamams.
This aqueduct was in use until the eighteenth century. Only about 386 meters (1,266 ft) with 55 arches remaining.
