It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, ‘As pretty as an airport’ - Douglas Adams
11 July 2019, Pointe Noire to Bondi, 48.15km
Auberge NFJ 10,000CFA (R244)
15km of city cycling brought us to the northeast edge of Pointe Noire. The city’s informal sector is alive and flourishing. The noise pollution bombarding us from the extended market strung long along the roadside was extraordinary. We cycled past a cemetery of large tombs and a military compound. The road was busy, but manageable, the only real concern being where it was made narrow by blown sand through which it was too dangerous to cycle and where we were forced into the centre of our lane.
Once beyond the city limits, the road was in perfect condition and made for great cycling. We are riding the N1 from Point Noire toward Brazzaville, but will turn north onto the N3 at Dolisie toward Gabon.
The Chinese residents at our hotel in Point Noire warned of elephant and buffalo on this road; the Congolese more realistically of logging trucks, of which there were plenty.
We managed to find an auberge in which to spend the night in the village of Bondi, which is unmarked on our map. A good day.
