31 January 2019, Bothaville to Wesselsbron, 65.5km
Wolf se Gat R350; dinner R80 per head

We were on the road at 05:30, anticipating a long, hot ride to Wesselsbron, our new back lights glowing bright red in the semi-dark. It was a long, hot ride - too long really for our fitness level, but the terrain, excellent quiet road, and our need to “be done”, brought us to our destination by 12:30-ish. Not bad, all things considered.
A lone cyclist, moving fast in the opposite direction, stopped to talk to us on his way back into town, having knocked off a quick 25km out and almost that much back before he encountered us again. A local policeman, he took up cycling three or four years ago, and loves it. And a bakkie-load of black men, also travelling in the opposite direction, did a U-turn in order to say hello and ask about our doings, then turned again and went about their business.
Wesselsbron is known for the largest silos (maize) in the southern hemisphere. These were visible long before we reached town, but in the burgeoning, bludgeoning heat of midday, and on the long incline into town, they seemed to recede rather than beckon - a little disheartening.
We are in farm country, with modern farm equipment, oddly pre-historic, sharing our road.
