6 May, Cumalikizik to Bursa, 14km
Gazcilar Oteli 50TL

Foreign travel on a tight budget can turn a daily chore into an adventure, especially where the locals converse predominantly in Turkish (go figure). We arrived today in Bursa, Turkey’s fourth most populous city, having cycled just under 14km from Cumalikizik. We arrived with a plastic bag full of dirty laundry, which we planned to take to a laundromat. Our hotel manager gestured us to the left. Later enquiries of a young man elicited from me a drawing of a washing machine and the words “wash clothes”; our Samaritan used his computer to translate my words and then his answer: “five by the way turn left”. Later still I got the church giggles watching Charl miming removing his shirt and spinning it in a washing machine and hanging it out to dry to a completely befuddled taxi driver. In the end we were directed to a dry-cleaner and have left our bag of washing with the charming man there. As he advertises cleaning wedding dresses, we assume our lycra cycling pants will come to no harm.
