We are running several days behind the
rough itinerary I crafted prior to us leaving South Africa, despite having cut
out our planned section of Mediterranean coast between Fethiye and Antalya.
Essentially, I marked on our map all the things we wanted to see and do, then
divided the distances between sites into 70km-120km sections, then calculated
the days allowed by our visa, then excluded some of the more ambitious
destinations, and so ended with a rough guideline for our time in Turkey. Charl’s
fall and slow recovery put paid to this fairly early on, but more importantly I
underestimated how tough the terrain would prove and how slow our progress,
therefore. I had, for example, estimated a one-and-a-half-day ride between
Antalya and Eğirdir; this would in fact have taken three,
which is why we took a bus yesterday. From here we head east into the
burgeoning heat, playing each section by ear...
