7 October, Istanbul
Haci Mimi Apartment 53TL
Istanbul’s public transport comprises
buses, trams (including historical cars), metros, funiculars, cableways and ferries.
We “explored” more of the city today by taking the T1 tram from Tophane near our
apartment, to Gϋneştepe one stop shy of the end of the line in western Istanbul
... and back again to Beyazit, the station serving the Grand Bazaar. Unbeknownst
to us, today was Eid al-Adha, an important Islamic holiday commemorating
Abraham’s demonstration of his obedience to God by the intended sacrifice of
his son. The holiday resulted in both the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, which
we had planned to visit, being closed for the day. Luckily several stalls
outside the spice market displayed and sold similar wares, giving us at least a
taste of the real thing. Nuts and dried or candied fruit, spices including
saffron piled high and smelling good, cheeses white and yellow, a myriad olives
green and black, Turkish delight, fresh mussels and organic Turkish tobacco. We
dined in Istiklal Street on spaghetti bolognaise and shopped for Turkish
delight at our favourite supplier, bringing home as usual 100g to enjoy.
