2007 Biking Burma
In Pindaya…
We frequented the local market selling
fruit and veg and blackened snakes on skewers to men and women with turbaned
heads.
And visited a limestone cave containing
8,094 Buddha statues placed there over several centuries.
Of the language and writing one author
said: “Burmese has the perverse syntax of Japanese and the tonal complexities
of Chinese. Its writing system is based on a devilish series of interconnecting
circles.”
He also amused us with these proverbs…
To throw pearls before swine = to play a
harp for a water buffalo.
To blow your own trumpet = to praise the
pickling of your own fish.
To bask in someone else’s glory = to lean
on the sacred white elephant and suck sugar cane.
